CONCRETE EDGING INFORMATION

Flexibility of Continuous Concrete Garden Edging and Kerbing

Concrete garden edging provides several options and exciting possibilities for adding value to driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, landscapes and gardens. Gutters and kerbs are essential components of various construction jobs.

They serve as a border that defines an area for walkways and parking lots or as decorative components surrounding flowerbeds.

CONCRETE GARDEN EDGING AND LAWN EDGING

Kerbs are commonly seen in parking lots and along the street, although they are also becoming a popular design option for landscapes and gardens. Concrete garden edging and lawn edging performs several functions. These types of concrete edges and kerbs are used for water retention within the garden bed. In the same manner, they are also included in the garden and landscape design to prevent stone and mulch from getting onto the sidewalk and lawn. They also serve as physical barrier for weeds. You can also mow right up to the very edge of the lawn when you have a kerb profile that is L-shaped.

USING SLIP FORMING MACHINES FOR CONCRETE KERBING

Slip forming machines make concrete kerbing a lot easier compared to using wooden and flexible materials. They can be used for a variety of concrete edging and kerbing jobs like those on curved walkways and garden beds as well as in parking lots in commercial establishments. This special machine can easily shape the kerbs and edges on compact soil and paved surfaces. For pavement kerbing or driveway edging, the kerb can be easily shaped and positioned with epoxy adhesive, lengthwise rebar or rebar spikes. In grassy surfaces, it is essential that the sod is removed and the best way to do this largely depends on the areas grass characteristic. A sod cutter can do the job or you may also opt for a bed edger. The bed edger breaks up the sod and pushes it on the curb’s bedside.

POURED EDGING VS. PRECAST EDGING – WHICH IS BETTER?

You may either go for poured-in-place concrete or precast concrete for your edging or kerbing project. If you are looking for speed and convenience, then you can opt for precast concrete kerbs and edges. Precast concrete edging is available in a wide range of colours, textures and shapes.

On the other hand, poured edging provides for higher density compared to precast concrete edging. This is most ideal for car park kerbing and garden edging. You must stick with the poured option in cases where higher compressive strength is essential or when you want to prevent water from seeping through to other areas. This makes poured edging suitable for driveway borders, street pavements and car parks.
